Essure
Essure is a non-surgical birth control implant marketed as a permanent contraception device. Approved in 2002, Essure is a flexible metal coil made from nickel, titanium and polyester fibers. Physicians insert Essure coils into the fallopian tubes to promote the growth of scar tissue, creating a sterile barrier that blocks sperm and prevents pregnancy.
Essure can fracture, migrate or perforate the body, potentially damaging the uterus, fallopian tubes or other organs. Some women with Essure implants have become pregnant, while others have developed nickel poisoning. If Essure becomes displaced, it can cause additional life-changing complications, such as:
- Cramping
- Infection
- Body aches
- Pelvic pain
- Irregular menstruation
- Allergic reactions
- Weight changes
- Fatigue
- Blood clots
- Hemorrhaging
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Birth abnormalities
- Miscarriage
- Death
Though Essure has been on the market for more than a decade, manufacturers never disclosed the device’s serious risks. Originally manufactured by Conceptus, Essure is now sold by Bayer, who also failed to warn women about Essure’s side effects.
After suffering severe emotional, mental and physical symptoms, Essure survivors have had to undergo costly removal surgeries.
